There is Sufficient Reason to Feel Optimistic Regarding Hydroponics

By moritz

homemade hydroponics
When you think about hydroponics, you will certainly feel a sense of optimism about the future of crop and plant cultivation as it bodes well for the times to come because we need some adequate means to maintain growth of plant life on earth in spite of the shortage of space. With the continuing rapid reduction of land, it is indeed heartening to know that there are alternatives available that are helping in removing our concerns as we consider life with less land area available for agriculture.

Little Land Existing

As man moves quickly towards greater industrialization and expansion and land is becoming an increasingly scarcer commodity today, what we know about hydroponics should help in containing this new onslaught against the precious commodity of land, which in the near future would be limited only to farmlands if the speed at which we are utilizing land does not slow down. As new condominiums are being built and even farmland is becoming scarce, we will have little farming land left to us.

Accordingly, scientists and experts have come up with a new method of cultivation that does not require much land, and this is what we understand about hydroponics which is that each and every person on the earth can readily engage in this activity. All that one needs is knowledge as well as equipment and a little bit of spare area in the home and one will be on one’s way. Thus, hydroponics means utilizing whatever extra space one has and cultivating plants and fruits at home may also mean that one won’t need to even go to the grocer to stock up for essential foods every day.

What is wonderful about hydroponics is that there is no difficulty in even purchasing the equipment required to grow your plants, fruits or herbs and they can be purchased at any local store and certainly over the internet. What’s more, you do not have to pay an exorbitant price and there is also nothing much required to use the equipment. With easy instructions that you can follow without a hassle, it would soon lead you to a new way of cultivating plants and maybe even provide freedom from buying groceries.

There is not much else you need to know about hydroponics and given the rapidly reducing land resources, it is indeed a viable alternative means to grow plants and vegetables as well as fruits and because land cannot be reclaimed once it has been used up, this is probably the best solution to space restricted gardening. Thus whatever we know about hydroponics is sufficient to instill a sense of confidence that man has been able to find ways and means to solve the problem of dwindling land resources.

The Ideal Hydroponics System

By moritz

homemade hydroponics
Any hydroponics system is based on the same primary principle: you replace the soil with something else to support plant roots, in an effort to give a chance in areas of the world where nothing grows because of poor soil quality, such as sand and ice deserts, high mountain platforms and many more. If we look at the word’s meaning : “hydroponics system”, ‘hydro’ means water and ‘ponos′ refers to labor, so a hydroponics system is defined as the “working water”.

How hydroponics systems evolved and who used them

A hydroponics system was attested to have been created and used for the first time by the Babylonians, and we also know that the Aztecs possessed similar knowledge about building it too. When referring to a hydroponics system as we know it today, we must take into consideration that the actual concept appeared at the beginning of the 19th century.

Over the last several hundred years, horticulturists and many scientists have tried to develop various hydroponics system models attempting to grow crops in regions of the globe where the soil makes traditional agriculture impracticable. A version of a hydroponics system was included in the NASA spacial program bringing fresh vegetables in space and helping astronauts clean the air.

Before the late 1970s very few people were interested in hydroponics system models and those pioneers were scientists or horticulturists. In the years that followed more and more people were attracted by this idea, and many hydroponics system models were bought to be used as a hobby.

Agriculture using hydroponics system models needs very few or no pesticides at all, since almost all the problems plants have are generated by soil, so practically you will have ecological crops at a decent price. If you are a professional horticulturist buying a hydroponics system isn′t an expensive and risky investment, because the need for ecological food has increased all over the world. Thus it is sure fact that there will be buyers for your crops. But not only horticulturists benefit from the advantages of hydroponics system models, teachers also find them very useful especially when teaching children about plants and crops.

What is the potential of hydroponics system models?

As I said before hydroponics system models bring something new, they are an innovation based primarily on technology and electrical power supply. I also have some doubts about those who say that hydroponics system models can bring food in poor countries, in such cases a hydroponic system needs an electric infrastructure first in order to serve community interests.

The potential of this new agricultural opportunity attracted many investors especially after the 80s, when all the hydroponics system components were made out of plastic, which is cheap and easy to replace when needed. Maybe this is the agriculture of the future.

Hot To Set Up Grow Lights in Hydroponics

By moritz

What are grow lights?

Grow lights are lamps that mimic outdoor lighting conditions in an indoor setting. These lights emit light in the same electromagnetic spectrum or wavelength as that emitted by sunlight. Most grow lights available emit light of a particular wavelength only since plants rely on different wavelengths at different stages of growth. For example, light in the blue spectrum promotes vegetative growth while flowering and fruiting relies on the red spectrum of light.

How are grow lights used?

Grow lights have a wide range of uses, both domestically and industrially. To maximize the efficiency of the lights though, it is necessary to install reflectors as part of the lighting system. The most commonly used reflector is a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) sheet painted white on the inner side for reflective purposes and black on the outer side to prevent fungal growth. Other reflectors used are white paint containing titanium dioxide, or special reflective substances like Mylar, Astrofoil, and Foylon.

Another way to obtain maximum light is to set-up grow lights as close as possible to the plants. The disadvantage of doing so is that the plants also receive excess heat produced by the lighting system and may get damaged by it.

What are the different types of grow lights available?

Many different types of grow lights are available. The choice of lighting system will largely depend on the lighting needs of the plant itself. The preferred systems for most plants are high intensity discharge (HID) lights like metal halide (MH) and high pressure sodium (HPS) systems. Other popular lighting systems make use of incandescent, fluorescent or LED (light-emitting diode) grow lights.

A garden without soil: hydroponics gardening

By moritz

&nbsp

A garden without soil: hydroponics gardening

By Els De Hertogh

What do the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Floating Gardens of China, and a popular science fiction television program have in common? Hydroponics gardening!

You may have heard of a hydroponics gardening system before this, in which case youll understand what Im talking about. If you havent heard about hydroponics gardening, dont worry. Hopefully by the time we reach the end of this article, you will have a clear idea of what a hydroponics garden is, and if someone asks you whether you think a drip system, or an ebb and flow system is better, then you wont have to squint at them and say eh? in that confused way.

Before we get on to the subject of drip, and ebb and flow systems, lets take a crash course in hydroponics gardening.

Coming from the Greek words hydro for water, and ponics for labor, the word hydroponics in gardening terms is used to specify a type of gardening that doesnt have its roots in soil, if you will forgive the pun. This soil-free type of gardening depends entirely on a water based system that is enriched with nutrients.

These nutrients can either be in the form of specially formulated chemicals for hydroponics gardening, or they can come as a variety of natural nutritional ingredients found in nature itself. The use of either nutrient form is solely dependent upon the gardener.

Since hydroponics gardening is a soil free system, containers are the best methods for growing, and a number of different varieties of containers, and pots are available to buy.

As a growing medium for the plant, something for it to get its roots into, different gardeners will have different likes and dislikes. Shale is a simple and easy solution, especially for the first time gardener. With a little bit of research however, you can easily find out if Hydroton or Rockwool is a better growing medium for you than shale would be. (Hydroton and shale can be used in an ebb and flow system, whilst horticultural Rockwool can be used with just about any system).

‘Any system referring to methods used to pass along the nutrient enriched water to the plants. Again there are many options for the hydroponics gardener to choose from, but I will explain here only the two systems that I mentioned earlier.

Simply put, the ebb and flow system uses a pump to respectively flood and then drain your containers at regular intervals. The drip system uses a continuous drip that supplies a steady ration of water solution thats right for each plant.

Also it should be noted that hydroponics gardens have a higher growth rate, and many gardeners take advantage of this to create high yield vegetable and fruit gardens.

Now that you now what hydroponics gardening entails to a large extent, with a little more research you should be able to set up your own hydroponics system, and keep yourself year round in fresh fruits and vegetables!

Want a garden but not enough room or soil? Then Hydroponics Gardening could be for you.

Want a garden but not enough room or soil? Then Hydroponics Gardening could be for you.

By Jan Money

Hydroponics gardening is a great idea for anyone who wants a garden but doesnt have enough land or soil. Hydroponics gardening is, essentially, a way to cultivate plants using a nutrient solution instead of soil. With hydroponics gardening, its easy to grow lovely flowers and succulent vegetables virtually anywhere you want! Its true that hydroponics gardening needs much less time than an ordinary garden. In fact, you might spend only five minutes a day maintaining youre hydroponics garden. Once a month the nutrient solution will have to be changed but this will only take a few minutes. Big fruiting vegetables like peppers and tomatoes may not be able to thrive but most other vegetables and flowers will do great. Tips for the newbie to hydroponics gardening. While hydroponics gardening can be a little confusing sometimes when starting out, youll soon get the jest of it. The same as you need gardening supplies for a ordinary garden, youll need hydroponics supplies for your hydroponics garden. The most popular system is the passive system. This is where the plants sit directly in the nutrient solution. All passive air systems use an aquarium air bubbler otherwise the solution can become deoxygenated and could rot the plants. If you can find the right system for you, hydroponics gardening could produce you with all the flowers and vegetables you could possibly want. For more information go to: http://www.gardeningsupply.info/

Hydropnics Q&A: The Basics Of Hydroponics

By moritz

Hydropnics Q&ampA: The Basics Of Hydroponics

By Harry Gurney

* What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics is commonly referred to as ‘the cultivation of plants in water.’ However, studies show that various media can support the growth of the plant. The definition was broadened to ‘the cultivation of plants without soil.’

* What is aeroponics?

Aeroponics is classified as a hydroponic method where roots of the plants are continuously or discontinuously place in an environment soaked with fine drops such as a mist or aerosol of nutrient solution.

* What are the advantages of hydroponics?

The most apparent advantage of hydroponics is its manageability to control the plant-growing environment. Other benefits of hydroponics are:

* Restricted supply of enough water only * Avoid high labor cost than traditional cultivation method * No need for high cost of soil fertilizer * Certainty of plant production

* Are there different kinds of hydroponics?

Actually, there are many different types of hydroponics. The major divisions are either media-based or water culture.

Under media-based hydroponics are the following:

* Flood and drain * Drip system * Wick Feeding

On the other hand, water culture hydroponics involve:

* Raft Cultivation * Nutrient film technique

Still, other techniques fall under the water-culture category.

* How much time does a hydroponic garden require?

Starting a hydroponic garden requires time, commitment and dedication. It needs plenty of time if you want to make sure that the plants are in good condition at all times. It will also take you longer to mix the nutrient solutions. From time to time, it is necessary that you check on the pests or diseases that will attack your plant.

The time element also depends on the kind of hydroponic garden you plant as well as how big and complex it is. The time element also depends on the type of plants you want to grow.

* Can I grow hydroponic plants indoors?

Definitely, growing hydroponic plants can also be done in your indoor garden. You just need to maintain a temperature that ranges from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. There must be a sufficient supply of water as well. Youll need to maintain the nutrient solution that you will apply everyday.

* What should I use for a light source?

Light is also one of the requirements for plant growth in a hydroponics system. Most of the cultivated plants need sunlight. However, when you grow plants indoor, artificial light such as bulb light is necessary. The intensity of the light that you are going to use must be high but make sure that it does not significantly raise the temperature.

* Do hydroponic plants grow faster than the plants in soil?

It will depend on how you manage the techniques that you are going to use in hydroponics. If the methods are followed properly, the growth of hydroponic plants will be faster than those planted in soil and the duration could even be longer. It will also vary with the kinds of plants. There are plants that grow faster with hydroponics but there are also those that do not.

Find Peace And Happiness Through Gardening

By moritz

Find Peace And Happiness Through Gardening

By Sue Jan

Gardening is a wonderful and relaxing hobby enjoyed by many all over the world. People who enjoy gardening often feel a deep-rooted sense of calm and tranquility, and they also forge a stronger connection with nature.

There are many types and forms of gardening. Organic gardening is a unique method of gardening and allows the gardener to really bond with Mother Nature. Organic gardening really gets down to the basics of growing fruits and vegetables, using only what Mother Nature provides. Container gardening is another way of gardening and allows many people who do not have their own garden to still enjoy gardening using pots and containers.

Container gardening is a great way to decorate and accentuate your house and your outdoor area. Plant containers such as clay urns, metal pans, terra cotta pots, wine tubs, wood boxes, bath tubs, glass bowls, wire baskets, sisal rope planters, cement hollows etc. all work well. You want to be sure to have an assortment of beautiful flowers and plants of varying heights as well as shapes and textures when planning your garden.

Organic gardening requires much more attention and involvement in the whole process. When you grow the plants organically, you do not add any artificial or chemical substances to the soil to avoid their negative health consequences. In organic gardening natural compost is needed to fertilize the soil. Natural compost is derived from plant, fruit or kitchen waste and contains no harmful chemical pesticides in it.

Whether you go for container gardening or organic gardening, the preparation and gardening methods are pretty similar. After you decide on what type of gardening you want to do, prepare your spot and soil for planting. You must remove all weeds, grass, stones, etc using various gardening supplies or herbicides. When this is completed, you can plow the planting area and add nutrients such as manure, compost, peat or sand to the soil. If your soil is too sandy, you will need to add compost to give it the necessary nutrients it needs.

Gardening supplies are essential for good gardening. They make gardening easy, and there are certain gardening supplies that gardeners find indispensable, including gloves, spade, scissors, pruners, levelers etc. Make sure to buy good quality gardening supplies for ease of use, such as gardening gloves made of high quality leather, and gardening spades or pruners made of stainless steel.

vegetable gardening

By moritz

vegetable gardening

By houston bruce

Successful vegetable gardening involves far more than just popping a few seeds into the ground and waiting for a tomato to appear. Ill briefly cover the basics of vegetable garden design, but you might also want to get some gardening books.

Planning your garden is one of the most important parts of vegetable gardening, and its quite simple. Whether its a vegetable garden, a flowerbed, indoor houseplants, or some combination, successful gardening requires planning, patience, and a little detective work. Whatever you do, do not choose garden soil, no matter how rich it might be, for indoor vegetable gardening! No matter what gardening zone your garden is located in there are catalogues with myriad variety of vegetables. Use these vegetable gardening tips to prepare your garden and keep your home full of fresh vegetables. Preparing your garden soil for planting is the most physically demanding part of vegetable gardening and may also be the most important part.

The patios and balconies of apartment buildings and condominiums often have good exposure for container vegetable gardening. Container gardening makes it possible to position the vegetables in areas where they can receive the best possible growing conditions. Container gardening can provide you with fresh vegetables as well as recreation and exercise. Although vegetable production will be limited by the number and the size of the containers, this form of gardening can be rewarding. Soilless mixes such as a peat-lite mix are generally too light for container vegetable gardening, since they usually will not support plant roots sufficiently. MEDIA A fairly lightweight potting mix is needed for container vegetable gardening. Soil Conditions The right type of soil for the right type of plant is key to successful vegetable gardening. Clay and sandy soils must be modified for successful vegetable gardening. Proper fertilization is another important key to successful vegetable gardening.

Buy seeds, seed starting kits and gardening supplies for vegetable gardens. If you are new to gardening, starting vegetables from seed may be too huge an undertaking, instead purchase plants. Practice crop rotation in your vegetable gardening by planting tomatoes and other vegetables in a different spot every year. Mulches can be used effectively in all types of gardening situations from vegetable gardens to flower gardens and even around trees and shrubs. I know an eyebrow or two might be raised at the suggestion of indoor vegetable gardening, but it can be done, within limits.

Added to the pleasure of gardening will be satisfaction derived from relishing vegetables freshly picked from your very own plot. Learning is a process, vegetable gardening needs time. As in so many other pursuits, so it is in the art of vegetable gardening: practice does make perfect.
